An Evening at the Ballet

A performance so beautiful I cried, and the strangers beside me who felt it too.

The gilded tiers and red curtain of the Royal Opera House, London, before a performance

I realised I was crying somewhere in the middle of the performance. Not because anything sad was happening on the stage. Because it was so beautiful.

The ballet was incredibly creative. Oh, it was just incredible. I had come alone. Once the lights went down, that stopped mattering.

What I did not expect was the people around me. They were feeling it too. I could tell. And they would reach out. As complete strangers, we had this beautiful experience together, and it connected us.

That is the part I keep coming back to. I did not know their names. We did not talk afterwards. But for two hours we were not strangers.

It was so full of hope. There is so much goodness, so much beauty, so much creativity in the world, and on that evening it was all in one room, and the room was full of people who could feel it.

I did not want the evening to end.
