Santorini, a Place to Find Peace

Trip Highlight

Greece is my favorite place on earth. I say that as a woman who has watched the sun set over the Aegean holding a champagne cocktail served in a juice glass.

Santorini taught me something no calendar ever did. It taught me how to be free. Free to wander little lanes that all end in blue, to become a regular at the sunset bar, to let a whole afternoon go by doing nothing at all.

Come for the white walls and blue domes. Meet the person you become in Santorini.

Beauty and dignity in every direction. I felt so grateful to be here, a place to find peace. "Whitewashed buildings perched on steep cliffs overlooking the Aegean Sea" indeed.

See more through my eyes

A few more glimpses from this trip.

Every lane seems to end in blue. I wandered them slowly, in no hurry to arrive anywhere at all.
White rooftops and a pool above the caldera
The village clinging to the cliff edge, looking up the coast
A blue-domed church against the sky
A white bell tower and blue dome
The terrace, with a table for one
A little plunge pool on the terrace. Cool water, warm stone, the sea just beyond.
A white chapel along the cliff path
Hiking across the steep terrain.
Dinner with a view
Sunset flaring over the village rooftops
Sunbeams breaking through clouds over the sea
The excavation stretches on and on. An entire city, patiently emerging from the ash.
Elegant pottery, painted thousands of years ago and somehow still full of life.
An intricate table, kept whole by the very ash that buried it.
Sailing the caldera as the afternoon light turned soft.
The chapel on the cliffs
Kayakers beneath the volcanic cliffs, tiny against all that dark stone.
Sunset over the Aegean, best seen from the water.
One more sunset, savoured slowly.
Golden hour over the rooftops, when all the whitewash turns warm and honey-coloured.
